Milbury increases concrete production capacity

Milbury Systems has completed construction of a new production facility at its concrete manufacturing works.

Concrete engineering specialist, Milbury Systems has completed construction of a new 360 sq metre production facility at its 5 3/4 acre concrete manufacturing works in Lydney, Gloucestershire.

The new building houses a casting bed for the manufacture of prestressed beams and columns which is already operational, producing units for use in the water industry.

The bed was recently used to produce concrete columns which now support a 24 metre extension to the new facility's crane rails at the rear of the building.

The extension will allow Milbury to store and load particularly large precast concrete units under its two cranes, which, operating in tandem, provide a 20 tonne lift capacity.

These concrete supports provide a more rigid free standing column than a comparative steel column which would require bracing to cope with the crane movements.

"The new facility will significantly enhance our production and storage capacity", commented Milbury works director, Simon Pearson.

"This enables us to supply the majority of our own precast concrete requirements so that we can offer our clients a more competitive and flexible full service from design right through to installation.

"We will be using the new prestressed bed to manufacture various types of columns, beams and ground beams.

The big advantage of a prestressed beam or column is that it is structurally more efficient than an ordinarily reinforced unit of the same dimension, uses less steel and, because a lighter unit can be used, provides savings in transport and on site lifting costs".

Milbury will use the remaining space in the new building to cast various precast products such as its unique Karapace retaining system and large concrete units which because of their size and shape are easier to handle under the high capacity craneage.
