How to get into the construction industry
Midas Homes have received over 100 applications for their apprenticeship scheme.
This week is National Construction Week and according to Building Manager Jason Hamer, "One of the best ways to get into the construction industry is through an apprenticeship scheme".
Jason is a Building Manager at Midas Homes and is also in charge of training apprentices.
"This year we received over 100 applications, some directly from individuals and others through CITB, the Construction Industry Training Board.
The applicants were interested in carpentry, plumbing, bricklaying, among other trades, and came from all over the South West.
"Apprentices generally spend 10 weeks a year at college and the remainder of their time gaining first hand experience on site.
The standard apprenticeship lasts three years, and those individuals who have shown a flair in their trade and are interested in progressing further can undertake an additional two to three year management programme." Glen Hilton is Site Manager for Midas Homes' Broadclose development in Bude, who got into the construction industry through the company's training programme.
He said: "The apprenticeship scheme worked really well for me and enabled me to gain valuable work experience while studying.
I continued to work with the company after my apprenticeship and progressed to the position of Site Manager shortly after.
Midas Homes is very committed to its training programme and I would definitely recommend the scheme to anyone considering a career in construction".
Jason Hamer added: "From an employer's point of view, apprenticeships are very valuable in terms of the experience and knowledge they gain.
I would also recommend anyone considering a career in the construction industry to always register with CITB".
