Miwa Locks Secure University Of Edinburgh

A Miwa product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Dec 5, 2003

Miwa Lock Co has won a contract to upgrade security at the University of Edinburgh initially installing 648 Miwa/Nexus AWH card based electronic locks in 'Chandlers Court' student accommodation block.

Part of a major upgrade project costing over £21 million at the University of Edinburgh, the new locks in Chandlers Court had to enhance security and work with existing student ID cards.

The university has over 120 nationalities on campus giving them a very cosmopolitan and diverse student community so they wanted to combine the latest in access technology with each student's individual ID card to ensure the safety and security of students and their possessions in the new accommodation block.

The ID cards issued to students features a magnetic stripe that has been pre-credited with access to some general areas within the university, notably the library, the accommodation block, the students individual bedroom and the pantry's.

A 4-digit PIN is also required when swiping the card for entry at most doors throughout the university.

The ID cards are valid for term time only and will not grant access outside this period.

Similarly, during the summer break the university often has summer schools, conferences etc running and they can issue cards to delegates attending these functions that are valid only for the period of their stay, from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.

Again the cards will deny access outside their pre-programmed period.

General Manager of Miwa Lock Co Ltd, Andy Purvis, said: "Having experience of other educational projects such as the Royal Holloway University of London certainly helped us win this contract.

We've initially fitted 648 of Miwa's Nexus AWH satin stainless steel finish locks working with 38 door control units.

Two hi-co motorised encoders and our Nexus System 600 enabled the technology to interface with the university's Magstripe access control system.".
