Royal Holloway University Installs Miwa

A Miwa product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Dec 17, 2003

Miwa Lock, specialists in fully integrated security systems, has installed 210 card based electronic locks, part of a major upgrade and refurbishment of facilities Royal Holloway, University of London

Royal Holloway Facilities Management Project Manager, Mr Mark Nettleton, said: "'Throughout the year, our facilities and services are enjoyed not only by the college community, but also by a range of corporate clients, visitors and other parties.

Forging these relationships and links with industry and the private sector helps ensure the continual development of Royal Holloway but also means that with so many outside visitors, security is something we must take seriously.

The university operates a cyclical building refurbishment programme for its residencies and as part of this development the replacement of traditional mechanical locks across the campus was reviewed.

The continual failure of the locks in one particular residence and the general high cost of repair and replacement of keys necessitated this across the site.

We have recently unified our various student cards (Library, Registry etc) and incorporated them onto our EPoS debit card.

This identity card was also used in our initial Magstripe access control system operating within one of our reception rooms." "Fitting in three phases, the first phase saw 190 new locks installed.

30 more followed, and a final 450 after that.

In addition, another 5721ocks will be required for anew build project that has already started.

This will be new self-catering accommodation for students with networked main doors and card access locks to student bedrooms.

The long term aim of the university is to have campus wide on-line access control and the potential across the site is for some 6,000 locks incorporating academic and administration areas as well as residencies." "I specified Miwa locks for the upgrade as the university wanted high density usage of the card/lock system and I knew of the association between Miwa and their installers NT Security as we had an ASSA on-line system and NT had done some upgrading of this.

I also liked their choice of products, experience of the educational market and their ability to interface with our existing access control system.".
