Millfield FRP has completed work for the Muslim Welfare Society on a new large mosque in Mossend, Motherwell.

Millfield FRP has completed work for the Muslim Welfare Society on a new large mosque in Mossend, Motherwell in a contract valued at £68,000.

Millfield's contract, which was direct with the Society, has included the design, supply and fix of domes and minarets in glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) and glass-reinforced gypsum (GRG).

Millfield worked closely with Archi-Structure of Bradford, the architects of the Mossend mosque, to complete the project, which comprises a main external dome, inner dome, Mehrab half dome and two minarets.

As specialists in Islamic architecture, Millfield has completed a large number of mosque contracts including six to date for Archi-Structure, who are the UK's leading design consultants for mosques and madresses.

Mr A Al-Samarraie of Archi-Structure comments, "We are pleased to have such a good relationship with Millfield.

Their quality of work is good and their attitude to challenges on site is refreshing." The 7 metre diameter main dome has been manufactured in high gloss green GRP with gold finish finial and crescent detail and incorporates twelve circular double-glazed windows, which have been insulated to 0.45k/m2.

The inner dome, which is complete with suspension point for a chandelier and a lightning conductor connection, has been completed in white high modulus GRG, while the 4.6 metre diameter Mehrab single-skin half dome, like the main dome, has been finished in high gloss green GRP.

The two minarets, sited 22 metres above ground level, had to be lifted into place and accurately positioned with Millfield's 50 tonne mobile crane.
