Fast installation of Metsec infill
walling

Metsec's SFS site fixed, light gauge, galvanised steel framing was chosen as infill walling for a new GBP23 million school in Coventry because of its fast and dry installation.

Approved Metsec installers ISEC erected 1,150m2 of 150mm and 200mm deep SFS sections between the main structural frame of the Caludon Castle community campus over a 16 week period of the 114 week construction programme for the new school buildings Main contractor Galliford Try, the PFI partner for the Caludon Castle Business and Enterprise Specialist School, has demolished the old school buildings on the site and replaced them with 14,500m2 of purpose built teaching and sports facilities in two phases

The first phase was a three storey crescent shaped building that opened to pupils in Spring 2006.

The second phase, comprising of an additional four single and two storey blocks adjoining the main building, accommodates music, drama, sports facilities and a new communal library, and is approaching completion.

Metsec's SFS was specified on the grounds of build speed, all-dry construction and flexible design.

Early dry envelope was achieved through fast installation of the framing sections and fitting of the external insulation board.

Using a team of specialist installers also took pressure off the traditional craftsmen, such as bricklayers, who are in short supply.

In addition, the dry construction resulted in a cleaner site, an important factor as one part of the 1,460 place school was open.

The SFS also needed to be a flexible system, both to accommodate the large windows and to provide lateral support for a range of external skins including brickwork, composite cladding, curtain walling and glazing.

Paul Stanley, estimator at installers ISEC, said: "The project went well.

It was a straightforward SFS installation because Metsec provided a complete set of very clear marked up drawings." Peter Farmer, Galliford Try's project manager, agreed: "The SFS element of the project worked well.

ISEC arrived, fixed the SFS quickly and efficiently and left, so it was one less concern on a complicated programme where we were constructing the second phase as part of a working school".

Caludon Castle is just the latest in a string of school projects which are using SFS as infill walling as part of the national building programme to replace or refurbish every secondary school and half of all primary schools in England by 2020.

Light gauge steel infill walling is proving increasingly popular because precision-engineered SFS stud sections give a fast, accurate and highly repeatable build.

The method is now widely recognised as one of the quickest and most cost effective ways of enclosing a building.

SFS has been specified as infill walling in over 1,000 buildings and, as pioneers of the building technique in the UK, the phrase a 'Metsec wall' has become a generic term.".
