Long span trusses on curved riverfront
development
Metsec has supplied 32 long span, lightweight steel trusses, plus zed purlins and 'C'-sections, to support the roof of 'The Hub', a curved, riverfront development in Chelmsford.
The crescent-shaped roof was highly complicated to design and detail as the hipped ends and valleys were not square, requiring the trusses and purlins to be set out to fit around a radius Kirk Allen, Metsec's Drawing Office Manager, said: "The detailing of this very complex roof design was simplified by the use of StruCAD 3D modelling software"

Metsec makes 35m span lightweight lattice trusses
Metsec has supplied 33 lightweight steel lattice trusses, each spanning 35m, for a new manufacturing plant for Milbank Floors in Norfolk.
The pitched lightweight steel trusses each spanned 15.5m and were 300mm deep at the shallow end, rising to 1400mm at the ridge to provide the required eight degree pitch.
The majority were delivered to site in two halves for ease of handling.
1400m of 142mm deep Metsec light gauge galvanised steel zed purlins of varying spans were bolted on top of the trusses to support the boarding which the stainless steel standing seam roof covering is fixed to.
1045m of Metsec 'C'-sections were attached to the underside of the trusses to provide a fixing for the protective layer of fireboard forming the ceilings of the penthouse apartments.
Metsec's trusses were specified because of their light weight, high strength and long span capabilities.
In addition, the free design and detailing service provided by Metsec as part of its customer support service was an additional factor given the highly complex nature of the roof.
