From Arc To Quench In 2ms

A Moeller Electric product story

Moeller has developed an even faster version of its Arcon arc fault protection system for use within its power distribution system.

Based on the ideal of quenching the fault arc before it has a damaging effect, it is able to respond in just 2ms - protecting both personnel and equipment alike.

Even smaller and lighter than before, once the arc quenching device receives a quenching command, it generates a metallic short circuit that extinguishes the internal arc, while the short circuit is subsequently switched off by the circuit breaker.

This method of operation means that the damage is kept to an absolute minimum, thereby providing optimum personnel and system protection and so reducing downtime.

Whatever the cause, the consequences of an arc fault in a power-switching device can be disastrous.

Within milliseconds of a fault's occurrence, pressures and temperatures rise to levels that can easily destroy the device's housing, cause sheet metal to melt and evaporate and start serious fires.

The effects on human beings working near such a device when an arc fault occurs can be extremely damaging.

Until now, a variety of regulations has dictated active and passive measures to protect humans and equipment from the effects of arc faults.

The emphasis has primarily been on protecting human life and extinguishing the arc fault, with a willingness to accept plant and equipment damage.

Through Arcon, Moeller has introduced the concept of comprehensive system protection to describe an approach that protects the functional integrity of a power distribution board while fulfilling all compulsory regulations regarding the protection of humans.
