The founder and head coach Alan Roberts, a 7th Dan Judo, World Class Performance Coach and Senior Examiner, is anticipating that at least two of his members will be taking part in the 2012 Olympics.
Commenting on the installation, Alan Roberts says: "The SunPipes are a most attractive feature and we are very pleased with the light they provide, which is soft and soothing with no glare".
"This makes them ideal for an area such as this, where members want to relax away from the (hectic) judo training areas." The building has a total mat space of 450 square metres, capacity for 300 spectators, changing and shower facilities, sauna, weights room, kitchen and social area with a cafe where both members and spectators can relax.
The social area is fitted with eight 530mm diameter Monodraught SunPipes to bring natural, energy-free light into the room throughout the day, even when it is cloudy.
The patented SunPipes feature a Diamond dome at roof level.
This catches practically all available daylight, which is then evenly diffused by a most unusual translucent, sculptured ceiling feature designed by the Make Architects to fit flush with the ceiling.
Commenting for Make Architects, Matthew White says: 'We specified Monodraught Sunpipes as they allowed us to bring all the richness and subtlety of natural light deep into the heart of the building in a playful and unexpected way.
This huge benefit was possible for a fraction of the cost of a traditional skylight, not only in capital terms, but also with regards to ongoing maintenance and energy costs.' Unlike many types of flourescent lighting, natural lighting from SunPipes is known to have a beneficial health effect.
It can also combat the effects of SAD and other more minor discomforts experienced with artificial lighting.
Monodraught SunPipes have been proven on countless prestigious projects throughout the world including Sports Halls, Clubs, Schools, Hospitals, Offices and Residential Homes.
By using SunPipes, at least 75% of the electricity used for daytime lighting can be saved, making a significant contribution towards environmental and cost savings.
SunPipes are maintenance free, vandal proof and experience no heat loss or solar gain compared to conventional rooflights.
