Mowlem contracts have clinched the top spots in two categories of the prestigious British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA) 2003.

The awards were presented at a dinner held in the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, London The Cowgate under 5's nursery in Edinburgh was chosen as the winner of the Small Project Award for projects of under £3m

The development, a design and build project delivered by Mowlem Building to re-house an existing nursery originally situated adjacent to the busy Cowgate Road, was designed by Allan Murray Architects.

The design used a distinctive patinated zinc curved rear wall incorporating large-scale angular roof lights to bring natural light deep into the building.

The block comprises four classrooms with associated administrative facilities and meeting rooms, all linked to the outdoor play courtyard.

The project is situated within the constraints of a small south-facing courtyard bordered on all sides by tall tenement blocks.

This meant that during construction, all materials and equipment had to be delivered through a very narrow entrance into the close.

The site team had to employ a great deal of lateral thinking to ensure the quality and programming requirements were achieved.

The project represents the first bespoke nursery to be built in the city centre for some decades.

The judges singled it out as being a brilliant transformation of an inner-city back alley that had become a den for drug addicts, and particularly praised the 'delightful project showing an ingenious approach to location, planning and construction'.

The Tay Bridge project in Dundee was awarded the Civil Engineering Award for projects valued at £3m - £50m.

The refurbishment of this historic bridge, which has stood for 120 years, was a huge logistical undertaking and was carried out by Mowlem Northern Civil Engineering with assistance from Mowlem Railways.

During the 30-month contract, the team had to strengthen and repair all old wrought iron work on the bridge, renew line-side walkways, replace ladders and catwalks, repair brick arches and undertake some cable management.

In addition, the judges picked up on the removal and cleaning of bird fouling - an amazing 1000 tonnes of bird droppings were scraped off with hand held tools within the confines of the hollow wrought iron pier superstructures and bagged up at 25kg a time by Mowlem's dedicated team! Some of the judges' comments on the project included: "The scale and logistics were quite staggering with work performed in very exposed conditions high up over the estuary and its fast running tides." "It was a stupendous achievement to complete, on time and on budget, strengthening repairs on the corroded 120 year old bridge." Both projects have won commendation in other awards since their completion.

The Cowgate under-5's nursery achieved Silver Medal status in the recent Edinburgh Architectural Association awards and was also shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award earlier in the year.

The Tay Bridge was shortlisted for the National Rail Awards Major Project of the Year and entered for the Saltire Award for Civil Engineering.

Willie Smith, Managing Director of Mowlem's Construction Services said, "The acclaim these projects have attracted is testament to Mowlem's capability in undertaking and delivering work of the highest standard.

We are delighted to have been acknowledged by such a prestigious awards body and would like to thank the site teams on both contracts, whose hard work and dedication ensured the projects' success.".
