3M produces liquid roof sealant

A 3M product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Aug 26, 2009

Scotchkote liquid coating from 3M has been specified for the encapsulation of an asbestos roof at a pharmaceutical company in Brentwood, Essex.

Scotchkote liquid roof membrane was selected to seal and protect the roof instead of traditional methods using tar, bitumen or felt.

The water-based liquid is free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and also free from odour and toxic risk.

Scotchkote enables the entire roof and potentially dangerous fibres, to be encapsulated with one coat.

The roof needed to be prepared before Scotchkote could be applied.

Safety netting and scaffolding were installed before the preparation began which involved pressure washing the existing surface to remove debris, and problem areas being treated with fungicide to prevent the regrowth of moss or lichen.

3M Poly-Tech bridging tape was then applied to all joints, laps, edges and seams and Poly-Tech reinforcing mesh was then added to these points.

The Scotchkote coating was applied cold to the entire pitched roof area, including all gutters and upstands, with rollers and paint brushes.

Scotchkote can offer a short-term waterproofing solution for flat asphalt roofs, and is suitable for single-coat application to mineral felt roofs with no priming required.

Scotchkote guards against corrosion, chemicals and weathering.

Scotchkote liquid roof membrane systems are guaranteed for up to 25 years.
