They think it's all over, it is now! Leading contractor Multibuild has completed a £2.3 m project for Walkabout, renovating venues in Birmingham and Barnsley in time for the Euro 2004 football frenzy With sport playing a major part in the popularity of Walkabout venues, the renovation projects were given a tight schedule to ensure that both of the venues were completed in advance of the Euro 2004 football championships

The popular flagship Walkabout bar and Surfers nightclub in Birmingham were completely renovated to create a single, bigger and better Walkabout venue.

The venue was given improved dining facilities with Multibuild converting the 1st floor into a large open plan dining area, and creating a large outdoor balcony overlooking the canal, to accommodate up to 50 diners.

Because the balcony was located directly above the canal, Multibuild, liaised with British Waterways throughout the project to ensure a safe, successful and on-time completion.

Due to the Birmingham venue's location within an old mill building, Multibuild installed larger windows to provide additional light throughout the venue.

On the ground floor, the bar and stage area were extended, and three new lifts were installed and doorways widened for full wheelchair access.

Even with extensive structural alterations - Multibuild replaced sections of the roof, removed existing walls and staircases, and created the new balcony - the entire project was handed over after just 18 weeks.

The new Barnsley Walkabout was created by merging two separate venues, a bar and nightclub owned by Regent Inns.

To create the new venue Multibuild converted the two buildings into one by removing the dividing walls, added new multi-level flooring and feature staircases and an Australasian themed beer garden.

To prevent disturbance to the flats above and businesses on either side of the venue, Multibuild fitted an acoustic seal onto the walls and ceiling of the venue.

Multibuild director, Dean Johnson commented, "The Euro 2004 kick-off was an immoveable deadline and represented a major business focus for Walkabout.

It was a real challenge to finish both venues on time, but we were able to divert resources from other projects to meet the tight deadline: at one time we had as many as 100 people working on the Birmingham site."
