The UK's leading construction and fit-out specialist, Multibuild, has completed its £1.25m transformation of an old cinema in the centre of Durham into a Walkabout Australian theme bar.
The Minister visited the site to gauge the scale of the project and to meet schoolchildren from the nearby All Saints High School, who will benefit from the new centre.
Operated by Goals Soccer, the new centre will have 10 all-weather five-a-side football pitches and a large sports pavilion with two sports halls, one competition-sized and one medium-sized, classrooms, a sports science laboratory, function room, therapy room, cafe bar, and extensive changing facilities.
Multibuild, the project's main contractor, will be responsible for the construction and fit-out all of the centre's facilities, the installation of the synthetic pitches and associated works.
The 32 week project is due for completion in October 2005.
