National Construction College is launching two temporary scaffolding centres at its Midlands and South college sites.

The National Construction College (NCC) announce that it is launching two temporary scaffolding centres at its Midlands and South college sites, effectively doubling its training provision at these centres, in line with industry demands to help address the shortfall in scaffolding training provision The College, which is the largest construction training provider in Europe, has been working closely with the National Access and Scaffolding Confederation (NASC) to find a solution to the shortfall, which is evident within some areas of the UK

The increased demand for scaffold training is a direct response to the major clients' insistence on using only CISRS qualified operatives on site.

The new temporary centres will be located at NCC Midlands, in King's Norton, Birmingham and NCC South, in Erith, Kent.

They will provide essential Part 1 training in both Tube and Fitting and Systems Scaffolding whilst the existing facilities will be utilised to deliver Part 2 and Advanced training.

Short duration product appreciation courses in systems scaffolding and S/NVQ practical assessments will be carried out over weekends to allow the centres to maximise their Part 1, Part 2 and Advanced provision during the working week.

The temporary centres will enable the college to double its training provision in these centres where regional employer demand has proved to be highest.

Training is expected to start in October.

Field Operations Manager of the National Construction College, Nigel Donohue said: "We are pleased to announce, that after negotiation with the NASC, we have been able to submit a business case to the ConstructionSkills board, to enable us to double our scaffolding training provision at the Midlands and South, which has been accepted".

"These sites have been carefully selected due to regional demand.

Our NCC East site in Bircham Newton, Norfolk meets current demand for the area and the new NCC Scotland premises will include a 1200 square metre scaffolding centre, which will be the second largest in the country, and will open for training in March 2008.

"We are pleased to have been able to respond quickly to address the shortfall in provision and look forward to continuing to work closely with the NASC and the Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme (CISRS) in order to meet current demand and provide sustainable training facilities".
