NCC new plant training course
National Construction College has developed a course to help ensure best practice approach when using quick hitches on excavators.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently identified the use of quick hitches as a key concern for the industry, with four fatalities occurring in the twelve months to December 2007.
The HSE issued a safety alert to users of excavators fitted with quick hitch devices, with enforcement action being taken against those who do not use this equipment properly.
The NCC developed the 'Safe use of excavator quick hitch devices' course in association with the Construction Plant Association in response to this research, and offers delegates the training they need to safely deal with this equipment.
The course provides delegates with an understanding of the various classifications of quick hitch devices, how to identify the risks associated with them and how to safely use quick hitches in the workplace in accordance with manufacturers' instructions.
Andy Newell, Plant Training Manager at the National Construction College, the training division of ConstructionSkills, said: "By working closely with industry, and striving to address current issues we have developed this new course".
"This course will provide those working in the sector with the knowledge, training and skills they need to carry out their job safely, which is critical information to the individual and imperative to maintaining the positive reputation of businesses in today's climate".
The half day course is aimed at operators and supervisors who have received no formal instruction as well as those requiring refresher training.
Delegates will be tested through a range of practical and written assessments, and will receive a certificate on completion and passing the course.
The National Construction College offers outstanding training to both young apprentices and adult students for a wide range of specialist courses, which are delivered by experienced instructors at the College's seven sites across the country, providing training for more than 30,000 people per year.
