NCC new Driving Courses improve road safety

A National Construction College product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jan 27, 2012

The National Construction College (NCC) to deliver two new driver training courses including the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC).

The Driver CPC course that has been developed in response to an EU Directive which states that professional bus, coach and lorry drivers must obtain a Driver CPC card by completing 35 hours of competency training every five years.

The Driver CPC qualification is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of drivers and improve road safety through better qualified drivers.

New drivers must pass an initial Driver CPC qualification before driving professionally that is split into four parts:.

- Part one - theory test.

- Part two - case studies.

- Part three - practical test of driving ability.

- Part four - vehicle safety demonstration..

Existing professional drivers will have gained valuable experience in their work and will have 'acquired rights' for five years, meaning that they will be deemed to have Driver CPC and will not be required to pass the initial qualification.

However, 35 hours of periodic training must be completed to keep the Driver CPC.

The College has also developed a Trailer Towing and Maintenance two day training course which is aimed at specialist contractors and again is designed to help improve driving standards and safety levels on the road, as well as on-site.

Andy Walder, Director of the National Construction College (NCC), said: 'Having a workforce that is operating as safely as possible can deliver significant benefits for businesses and ultimately save them thousands of pounds in costs each year.

It's not just about compliance with legislation; incorporating health and safety into a business could save employers unnecessary costs, and increase their productivity - helping business to succeed and grow in the future.
