East Midlands law firm Nelsons is to provide legal advice for local members of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) following an exclusive agreement The firm, which has offices in Nottingham, Derby and Leicester, has been designated as the sole legal representative recommended to members of the trade association in the Trent region covering Nottingham, Derby, Lincoln and Chesterfield

Established over 60 years ago, the FMB is an independent and non-profit-making body whose mission is to protect the interests of small and medium-sized building firms.

Today, it is the largest trade association in the UK building industry with over 350 members in the Trent region alone.

As a result of the agreement, FMB members can call a dedicated helpline for free initial advice on a wide range of legal matters, including contracts, disputes, company and partnership formation, acquisitions and disposals, site assembly and all land law associated with development work.

Advice can also be sought on employment, debt recovery, health and safety, environmental matters, road traffic offences and investigations by other authorities such as the Inland Revenue, HM Customs and Excise, DTI or the police.

A 24-hour emergency line has been put in place with respect to investigations and, following their free consultation, FMB members are eligible for special hourly fee rates.

Future plans include joint seminars and in-house training.

Ron Wilson, Regional Director at the Federation of Master Builders comments on the partnership: "This is yet another valuable benefit to our members in the Trent area.

The selection of our partners is based on the level of expertise and experience in the construction industry, and the availability of specialists in the team." Instrumental in the future success of the initiative will be Jocelyn Taylor, partner and head of the construction team at Nelsons.

A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, regional co-ordinator for the Society of Construction Law for Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and South Yorkshire and an elected Council member of the Society of Construction Law, she comments: "This is a tremendous opportunity for Nelsons to demonstrate the specialist knowledge it has built up over many years working in the construction industry, from handling contracts and terms and conditions to dispute resolution through arbitration, adjudication or litigation.

"Specialist advice is also given in areas such as health and safety, environmental and employment law.

We hope that FMB members will see a real benefit from having ready access to support and advice across a wide range of matters." FMB members requiring further information can call the helpline on 0113 393 4040 during office hours.

Members needing the 24-hour emergency line should call 07000 150160.
