Former Newey and Eyre managing director and a well-known figure within the electrical wholesaling industry, Gordon Yardley, has died aged 74.
Former Newey and Eyre managing director and a well-known figure within the electrical wholesaling industry, Gordon Yardley, has died aged 74 He began working for Newey and Eyre in 1951 as a junior accounts clerk, working his way up to managing director in 1974, a position which he held until becoming executive director and chairman of the BTR distribution in 1988

Well known and respected within Newey and Eyre, Gordon was responsible for evolving a completely new management structure.
During Gordon's reign, the business expanded rapidly and an export division together with a specialised offshore oil operation were also set up.
In addition, Gordon was instrumental in establishing a significant presence in the United States through the purchase of companies in the southern Sun Belt.
Long after his retirement, the decision was taken to name Newey and Eyre's Head Office, Yardley Court, as a tribute to his many years of dedicated service.
Gordon Yardley believed in the value of trade associations.
He was a member of the Council of the Electrical Wholesalers Federation (EWF) for many years, serving as Treasurer and in 1968, as President.
He was the EWF's delegate to the European Union of Electrical Wholesalers (EUEW) and was President of EUEW from 1981 to 1983.
Robert Elsmore, a former director of Newey and Eyre, who worked with Gordon for 35 years said: "Gordon was held in the highest regard among suppliers, customers and chief executives alike".
"He was the most able, dynamic and enthusiastic businessman I had ever met".
"The loss of Gordon is that of an inspirational leader, wise counsellor and very good friend both in and outside of business".
Mr Yardley passed away at the Priory Hospital in Edgbaston on December 12th 2005.
