New fire safety rules affect all non-domestic premises in England and Wales and contractors need to be aware of the new legal obligations.

Amid confusion among contractors around fire safety rules, leading electrical wholesaler, Newey and Eyre, has produced a free leaflet to help customers get to grips with the latest legislation, available from all 175 branches nationwide The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRO) became law in October 2006 and replaces many references to fire safety in previous legislation

The new fire safety rules affect all non-domestic premises in England and Wales and contractors need to be aware of the new legal obligations, not only for the benefit of their own business, but also for that of their customers.

Luke Biddle, marketing manager at Newey and Eyre says: "In the past few years a lot of new regulations have come into force and contractors can find it difficult to make the time to keep on top of changing legislation".

"The most recent fire safety rules represent an opportunity for contractors to go back to their customers to make sure they are up to speed on the new requirements, and where appropriate, help them meet their duty of care".

The new rules require a responsible person in any business to effectively manage fire risk assessment, fire safety policy, fire procedures, fire drills, means of escape, emergency lighting, fire alarms and extinguishers, fire doors and compartments, fire evacuations, signs and notices.

If the regulations are not complied with, businesses are breaking the law and could face prosecution.

And if there is a fire, insurance policies could be disputed and in some cases void.
