NHBC statement - health and safety forum
Speaking at a health and safety forum chaired by Peter Hain, Work and Pensions Secretary, NHBC's chief executive, Imtiaz Farookhi welcomed the initiative which had brought stakeholders together.
Farookhi said: "This is clearly a serious issue that the house-building industry must tackle, but to do so there is a need for more accurate and robust statistical data" Firstly, it is important to separate fatalities in new build from those in Repair, Refurbishment and Maintenance (RRM)

Improving standards of health and safety
A major drive to improve standards of health and safety in the Scottish house building industry has been launched.
Grouping them together hides important differences between the two sectors.
The vast majority of new build, for example, is carried out by large national companies with no directly employed labour, whilst the majority of RRM is carried out by small local contractors often with many more directly employed trades.
"Secondly, in our view, statistical data relating to the industry should be expanded to include incidents involving non-fatal major injuries".
"This would potentially give a far better statistical basis from which to judge the performance of the industry rather than to focus purely on the 12 fatal incidents last year".
Farookhi went on to stress the importance of building on and disseminating health and safety best practice throughout the industry: "NHBC has committed its support to Peter Hain and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in taking the work forward".
"We will be talking to the HSE, HBF and other trade associations to discuss both helping to capture more precise statistical data and consider ways NHBC can facilitate the effective promotion and dissemination of best practice guidance to the industry.".
