As a result of the acquisition by NYT, Edmund Robson's current workforce of 14 is expected to increase by 25 % over the next year.

The company will continue to trade under its traditional name, led by Mark Hutchison, the previous owner.

"The acquisition is very good for all aspects of the business, from being able to offer a wider range of products to our loyal customers in the area and also the stability it brings to our staff," he said.

"Larger stock holdings by NYT will make us more competitive and better positioned in the marketplace".

The acquisition by NYT will see a wide expansion of the range of timber products and builders' merchants products available to construction companies, house builders and the general trade - with interest from the self-build housing sector - at the Tyne Dock site.

NYT currently has a turnover of more than GBP15,000,000 and its latest acquisitions include builders' merchants Ward and Naylor of Wingate in County Durham Peter Kershaw, managing director, NYT, said: "This is a regionally strategic move northwards for us, adding to our existing strength in the North-East, and we anticipate there will be more acquisitions ahead".

"Our core ranges of softwood carcassing, redwood, sawn and machined hardwood and softwood continue to sell extremely well," he added".

""Also available will be natural stone paving to complement the fencing and decking ranges".

"We see this product opportunity It's a logical extension to our products for all aspects of building and construction, and we have the sole rights to distribute this particular range in the North-East".
