A North Yorkshire Timber product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Mar 10, 2008

Tom Swan Builders' Merchants has made a firm choice for its future by dovetailing with North Yorkshire Timber.

The move will allow the company to utilise North Yorkshire Timber (NYT) expertise and support for expansion, ensuring a successful long term future.

The acquisition by NYT will see the company continue to trade under the name Tom Swan, carrying on a family tradition of over 60 years experience in the building industry.

Tom Swan took over his father Tom's building business in 1946 on returning from the second world war.

He went on to set up a DIY store in 1952 before moving to the current site at Tynemouth in 1968.

His son David took over from his father in 1983.

David Swan (pictured) said: "The acquisition is very good for all aspects of the business, for existing and potential new customers and also for the stability it brings to our 12 staff".

"Larger stock holdings by NYT will enable us to deliver a greater range of builders' merchants products as well as introducing a larger choice of timber materials to existing and new customers".

"NYT will help us to grow whilst maintaining our identity as a local family business".

Peter Kershaw, managing director of NYT said: "Tom Swan will be able to expand its product range to include more timber as well as builders' merchants products, so our customers can get all they need in one place".

"We look forward to introducing North Shields customers to our flagship products such as hardwood and softwood joinery timbers, oak flooring, feature doors, fencing and decking, as well as our newer range of natural stone paving".

"We see this acquisition as a logical extension of our business, adding to NYT's strength in the north east".

"Our acquisition accountants Clive Owen and Co LLP, led by Angus Allan their Corporate Finance Partner, have been instrumental in identifying and delivering new opportunities to support our extension as a business"".

""The addition of Tom Swan, building on our steady expansion over the past few years, helps us to broaden our customer base and achieve our aim to be a one stop shop for developers, tradesmen, self build enthusiasts and the public".

NYT currently has a turnover of over GBP16 million and its latest acquisitions include South Shields-based Edmund Robson and Co , Timber Merchants, and Ward and Naylor Builders Merchants of Wingate.

The company holds Investors in People status and environmental certificates from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and Forest Products Chain of Custody (FPCC).
