Demand for Norbord Sterling OSB grows
Demand for Norbord's Sterling OSB board has increased substantially in South Wales thanks to success of fast-expanding timber frame manufacturer, Goodwins Timber Frame.
Goodwins Timber Frame is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Dublin-based Goodwins Group which has been supplying building materials and products to both the construction industry and self-build sector for almost 30 years In June 2005, inspired by the current popularity of timber frame construction in the UK housing market, Goodwins set up a new timber frame factory on a 7.5 acre site at Pontymister, South Wales

Since it opened, the Pontymister factory has grown at a phenomenal rate.
"Two and half years ago, we employed just five people here".
"Now we employ 67 and we're still growing fast", says Paul Tappin, Technical Sales Manager with Goodwins Timber Frame.
The company has also secured several multi-million contracts with leading UK housebuilders including Wainhomes and Linden Homes.
In Ireland, where Goodwins is also a major builders' merchant, the company's timber frame components are sourced directly from within the group.
Yet, as Mr Tappin explained, Goodwins is obliged to source its materials via the merchant networks in the UK, where it has no merchant outlets of its own.
"When we started up in Pontymister, we needed to find a reliable source of OSB3", says Mr Tappin.
"There was lot of ordinary OSB2 available, but we needed a structural board with a level of moisture-resistance".
"We eventually found that Norbord could provide us with a reliable supply" he explains.
According to Mr Tappin, Norbord's Sterling OSB proved the best deal in several ways".
"It is competitively priced, it's fully FSC certified and it's from sustainable Scottish forests".
"It's a 'tighter' board, less likely to splinter when being handled in the factory", says Mr Tappin.
Another important factor was Norbord's ability to satisfy Goodwin's specific design criteria, says David Webb, area sales manager for Norbord".
"We can provide 'odd-ball' sizes without any difficulty, which is useful for certain clients".
"Goodwins requires boards measuring 2440 mm x 1200 mm instead of the standard 2400 mm x 1200 mm" he says.
Goodwins uses Sterling OSB as a sheathing board on both the inner walls for racking where needed and the outer leaf of its timber-framed wall panels. Request a free brochure from Norbord ...
