Norbord chosen for timber frame nursing home
Large quantities of Norbord's SterlingOSB and Caberdek flooring have been used in the construction of a new 80-bed nursing home in Morecambe, Lancashire.
The concept of this project originated when Harry first came across SterlingOSB3.
He explained "I have always been struck by its beauty and thought that more can be made of it than use as site hoardings and on prefabricated housing.
Finding more environmentally sensitive resources is a definite must in modern design and manufacture and I wanted to produce some furniture that was not only visually exciting but also justified its existence environmentally".
At first, Harry researched the applications for SterlingOSB in furniture design.
He added "Through my project, I wanted to raise the profile of SterlingOSB in furniture manufacture and see it more widely used in its untreated form".
So far, Harry has used eight sheets (2440mm X 1220mm) of moisture-resistant SterlingOSB3 and is working through the 250kg of wood wafers (raw product from which SterlingOSB panels is made) which Norbord donated.
"Norbord has a global presence, a strong reputation and a good supply chain which makes it easy to source products locally" said Harry.
"Norbord's strength and environmental credentials are what attracted me in the first place, as well as its manufacturing consistency making it reliable and easy to work with", he added.
"Norbord has been extremely supportive of me and without their help, this project would not have been possible.
Not only have they supplied me with a huge amount of SterlingOSB3 wood wafers for my research, they have also been invaluable in answering all my pestering questions".
Harry's project, along with all the other projects of fellow students, will be exhibited in June 2008 at the "MADE IN BRUNEL' show at the Business Design Centre in London. Request a free brochure from Norbord ...
