Caberdek contributes to safer work at
height

Norbord's Caberdek P5 flooring system greatly enhances standards of safety during the construction process by reducing the risk of falls.

When Norbord introduced its Caberdek P5 flooring system, it was hailed as a major step forward in the drive for a higher quality, more efficient building process With its waterproof protective film and revolutionary Fastfix adhesive system, Caberdek P5 meant that, for the first time, it was possible to install suspended timber floors even before the roof was on and the building made watertight

Caberdek has another major benefit: it greatly enhances standards of safety during the construction process by reducing the risk of falls.

During 2005/6, falls resulted in 46 deaths and over 3,300 major injuries [HSE: The Work at Height Regulations 2005 (as amended) - a brief guide].

In that year, the new Work at Height Regulations were introduced, replacing all previous legislation and implementing the European Council Directive 2001/45/EC concerning minimum safety and health requirements for the use of equipment for work at height.

In the housebuilding industry, the old practice of using loose-laid boards over timber joists as a temporary working platform during the construction process is no longer acceptable.

Thanks to Caberdek P5, it is no longer necessary, either.

With the introduction of the new Regulations, employers are obliged to follow a hierarchy of measures to protect workers from falling.

The first priority is to eliminate the need to work at height altogether; where this is not possible, the second step is to provide suitable equipment such as access platforms or scaffolding which will minimise the risk of anybody falling while working at height.

The third and final step is to provide equipment which will minimise the consequences of a fall, such as lanyards and harnesses, protective netting, or crash decks designed to break a person's fall.

While it is impossible to eliminate the need to work at height in the housebuilding industry, Caberdek, when correctly installed, will assist with 'falls protection' as required by the latest regulations.

Caberdek is weatherproof and designed to be laid as the building work progresses and, hence it provides a secure and permanent working platform for all following trades in the construction process.

The protective film prevents dirt and moisture penetrating the Caberdek surface and, when the roof is installed and all wet trades completed, the film is simply peeled off to reveal a pristine surface ready to receive the floorcovering.

However, this film also has a safety function.

Its non-slip surface means that, even when wet, it provides a secure and safe surface on which to work.

Together with Fastfix adhesive and a special jointing tape, Caberdek is a comprehensive flooring system which not only speeds up construction times and enhances safety, but can also deliver much better build quality than traditional systems.

The Fastfix system reduces the number of nails required for boards laid across 600 mm centres from 17 to just three.

Fixing Caberdek boards directly to composite timber I-beams with an adhesive also drastically reduces the risk of creaking floors - by far the biggest snagging defect and one of the main call-back issues in the new-build housing sector.

Jim Caldwell, technical service manager with Norbord, says: "Caberdek provides a safe working platform in all weather conditions and removes the need to use temporary boards".

"Then, when you've finished, the removable film leaves a clean floor which means less time and money spent clearing up.".
