Norbord sustainable products website

A Norbord product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jun 30, 2009

Norbord has launched Better by Far, an online explanation on how its engineered wood-based panels are more environmentally friendly.

Norbord has launched a new website where visitors can gain a fascinating insight into the forestry industry and find out why sustainable forest management and local production makes Norbord's range of board products far better for the environment than imported material.

The site is full of facts and figures that challenge assumptions about the forestry and wood products industries.

For example, 1.6 billion people worldwide depend on forests for their livelihood; Forest cover is increasing in Europe by half a million hectares every year; Norbord's main source of wood fibre in Europe is FSC-certified forest thinnings of new-growth pine and spruce from well-managed forests.

Better by Far shows how for each tree harvested in this way, two seedlings are re-planted; and as young, fast-growing trees are best at absorbing CO and emitting oxygen, this has to be good news for the environment.

"People need to understand the difference between harm done by destructive, wasteful deforestation and the positive contribution made by sustainable forest management" explains Steve Roebuck, Norbord's Environment, Health and Safety Director.

"With Better by Far, we want to show that we not only care about the environment but that we are doing something positive about it".

"Visitors to the site will discover why the products we make can contribute to reducing carbon emissions and global deforestation".
