Stonhard supplies Metro station with resin floor
Stonhard UK has provided resin flooring to be installed over aged Terrazzo floors on all concourse and platform areas at a Tyne and Wear Metro station.
Breaking out old Terrazzo tiling is both expensive and time consuming.
Stonhard's Stonres resin flooring has been installed at Haymarket Metro Station in Tyne and Wear
Project managers faced with removing old, cracked tiling are forced to contemplate a limited range of options.
Nexus operate Tyne and Wear Metro and are currently managing a modernisation programme for the Metro, over a 9 year period.
The redevelopment of Haymarket Station is now complete.
All concourse and platform areas including street level were refurbished.
The original Terrazzo flooring was high noise, unsightly and had poor slip qualities.
Tiles were well bonded however and removal costs to enable new flooring were extremely high.
Time was also an issue with limited closures and most works needing to be completed around public and train timetables.
The railway sector is heavily regulated and Health and Safety issues remained critical throughout the project.
The flooring selected to manage the job was an overlaid product form Stonhard UK.
Stonres RTZ resin floor was laid over the original tiles and sealed with matt slip resistant coatings.
The system allows for minor movements under the flooring.
Stonhard UK worked with Tolent Construction to plan works over 9 months, coping with only one 10 day closure in May 2009.
The working environment was unheated calling for the erection of tents within which the resin product could be heated prior to laying.
The finished product is a heavy duty, aesthetically pleasing floor surface that provides effective noise absorption, particularly within the tunnels.
Stonhards' complete service covers RandD, manufacturing, installation, project management and after sales.
This allows them the distinct advantage of a single source warranty on both the product and standard of workmanship.
Floors are designed with sustainability in mind, tough surfaces designed to withstand corrosive chemicals and years of abrasion.
