Case study: Building on the edge

A Natural Building Technologies product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jun 3, 2005

The Stream Edge development is designed and built using Natural Building Technology environmentally-sensitive, high performance building materials and systems.

The Stream Edge is a large, prestigious development close to the centre of Oxford.

It has been designed and built using Natural Building Technology's (NBT) environmentally-sensitive, high performance building materials and systems.

The site includes 36 luxury apartments, social and student housing plus retail and commercial accommodation.

The developer's aim was to construct buildings which were in keeping with their urban setting, but which had modern appeal and used environmentally-friendly materials wherever possible.

Three separate NBT systems were used for the walls and roofs, together with a range of the company's woodfibre boards, insulation materials and lime/cement renders.

The walls achieve a U-value of 0.18 W/m2K through their use of NBT's Pavatex Diffutherm 80mm Woodfibre board, which was rendered with NBT's propriety BaumitBayosan lime/cement render.

Other areas used 80mm Pavatex Pavatherm Plus board clad with terracotta tiles.

The wall boards were backed with 150mm Sheepswool Batts, which fully filled the space between the steel studwork.

The roof has a U-value of 0.20 W/m2k and was produced using 22mm Pavatex Isolair Woodfibre boards, with the space between the trusses filled with 200mm Sheepswool insulation.

Due to the high level of insulation the building will have low heating costs and, coupled with NBT's environmentally sustainable materials and construction systems will also ensure it has an exceptionally low environmental impact.
