Nu-Lok is an innovative approach to roofing that uses a galvanised steel frame in combination with ceramic slate tiles. The speed of installation recently impressed Cobsen-Davies.

"A competent roofing gang can lay around 500m2 in a week With Nu-Lok, I could install double that area on my own, once the battens are down"

This was the verdict of Peter Edwards, managing director of Cobsen-Davies Roofing (Bicester) Limited, having used the innovative Nu-Lok Roofing System for the first time.

He was commenting on a refurbishment project in Buckinghamshire where two blocks of upmarket apartments at Cedar Court, Gerrards Cross, have become the latest buildings in the UK to benefit from the system, which is available from Nu-Lok Roofing Systems (UK) Limited.

Nu-Lok is an innovative approach to roofing that uses a galvanised steel frame in combination with ceramic slate tiles.

It was selected over a resin-based roof product for its durability and colourfastness, both of which are guaranteed for fifty years.

Roofing challenge Cedar Court was constructed seven years ago and comprises two three-storey blocks of apartments, each with a complex roof design.

A Mansard roof of 70deg pitch rises to a higher roof with a pitch of 35deg.

In addition, the roofline is interrupted by twenty dormer windows with curved profiles.

The buildings were originally constructed with a double-lapped, resin tile roof, but residents had suffered a series of leaks as well as loss of slates in high wind conditions.

There had also been unacceptable loss of appearance due to fading.

Following a report by NHBC-appointed roofing consultants Michael Kilbey Associates, and in conjunction with the Residents Association, it was decided to have the roof replaced.

A Felts Building Contractors were appointed as the approved main contractor for the project and Cobsen-Davies Roofing (Bicester) Limited undertook the roofing works.

It is usual under these circumstances to replace the defective roof with like-for-like.

Cobsen-Davies quoted for an equivalent resin roof type, but also offered Nu-Lok as an innovative alternative solution.

Innovative alternative solution.

The patented, highly innovative Nu-Lok Roofing System can halve installation times, reduce overall project costs and minimise future maintenance while providing a high quality, traditional slate effect.

Although new to the British market (the system was officially launched at Interbuild 2004), hundreds of thousands of square metres of Nu-Lok have been installed or specified already on construction and refurbishment projects in England, Northern Ireland, America and Australasia.

The system comprises a patented metal fixing system that replaces traditional timber battens with a heavy gauge galvanised steel batten.

The Nu-Lok Link Channel then snap-fits between the battens without the need for additional fixings.

Each Link Channel features a high-grade 316 stainless steel locking clip, used to secure the leading edge of each slate.

Designed to eliminate the need for side-lapping of slates, the Link Channel routes rainwater onto the surface of the ceramic slate below.

The innovative fixing system is used with Nu-Lok's proprietary vitrified ceramic slates, which are virtually non-porous (<0.03%) and will not sustain biological life, preventing moss and algae growth.

Their traditional slate appearance provides a high quality aesthetic finish on new buildings and also wins favour with planning authorities in conservation areas where the existing roofing material is predominantly slate.

A significant benefit of Nu-Lok Ceramic Slates is that each slate is through-coloured, making fading literally impossible.

Their high compressive strength, flatness and excellent dimensional stability mean future warping is eradicated.

All these features ensure that a Nu-Lok roof requires little or no maintenance and will continue to look as good as the day it was installed.

Outstanding performance.

With the NHBC's consent, Nu-Lok was specified for installation at Cedar Court.

Because of the problems experienced with the original roofing method, durability was a deciding factor - as was the colourfastness of the tiles.

Nu-Lok not only met these requirements, it brought additional confidence because of the 50-year Performance and Colourfast Guarantee offered as standard by manufacturers Nu-Lok Roofing Systems (UK) Limited.

Approximately 850mư of the new roofing system was fitted across both apartment blocks by Cobsen-Davies Roofing (Bicester) Limited.

The roofing contractors found the system very easy to install, as Peter Edwards, Managing Director of the Bicester operation, explained.

"The Nu-Lok Ceramic Slates are incredibly easy to handle because they are lightweight and uniform in shape.

The ceramic cuts to a perfectly straight line every time, so we achieved an excellent finished quality." Above all, Mr Edwards was impressed with the ease and speed with which a Nu-Lok roof can be assembled.

"The potential for this system is huge.

I reckon it could double the area of roof we can lay in a given period.

A competent gang can lay around 500m2 in a week.

With Nu-Lok, I could install double that area on my own once the battens are down.

This ease of installation, combined with the high quality finish and durability of the system, makes Nu-Lok pretty awesome." Introduced to Britain less than one year ago, the Nu-Lok Roofing System is taking the market by storm.

It has already been selected over traditional roofing products on a number of specifications where Nu-Lok is to be used in conjunction with the Kingspan TS 1000 Tile Support System.

The two products are ideally suited to each other: a fact that has not escaped the architects!.
