Section H65 of National Building Specification (NBS), which covers single-lap roof tiling, has been amended to include the latest innovation in roofing systems.

Section H65 of National Building Specification (NBS), which covers single-lap roof tiling, has been amended to include the latest innovation in roofing systems NBS is published by RIBA Enterprises, a company wholly owned by the Royal Institute for British Architects

It is designed to enable architects and building designers to prepare accurate specifications.

Section H65 previously contained specification clauses and guidance only on single lap clay and concrete tiling with timber counter battens - a fact that excluded new breeds of roofing product such as the innovative Nu-Lok roofing system, which uses ceramic slate tiles in combination with a galvanised steel framework.

Mark Carmichael, managing director of Nu-Lok Roofing Systems Limited, praised the NBS for responding so promptly in incorporating innovation into its standards.

"Nu-Lok is an innovative new product that entered the UK roofing market just eighteen months ago".

"Being acknowledged and accepted by independent third parties is a major milestone in gaining market share." He continued: "Specifiers and end-users of roofing systems will always weigh the perceived benefits offered by new products against the reassurance of traditional methods, so it is important that they have access to the latest information".

"I am delighted that they can now refer to Section H65 of NBS and be confident of correct specification with regards to the Nu-Lok roofing system." Nu-Lok comprises a patented fixing system that replaces traditional timber battens with a heavy gauge galvanised steel batten.

The Nu-Lok Link Channel then snap-fits between the battens without the need for additional fixings.

Each Link Channel retains a high-grade 316 stainless steel locking clip, used to secure the leading edge of each slate.

Designed to eliminate the need for double lapping of slates, the Link Channel routes rainwater onto the surface of the ceramic slate below.

There is no need for accurate measuring, drilling or nailing.

This significantly reduces labour time and margin for error, engineering out many of the problems encountered with traditional roofing methods.

In addition to the innovative fixing system, Nu-Lok uses a proprietary vitrified ceramic slate.

Nu-Lok Slates are virtually non-porous (<0.03%) and will not sustain biological life, preventing moss and algae growth.

Their traditional slate appearance delivers a high quality aesthetic finish that blends well with existing buildings.

Each slate is through-coloured, making fading literally impossible.

Their high compressive strength, flatness and excellent dimensional stability mean future warping is eradicated.

All these features ensure that a Nu-Lok roof requires little or no maintenance and will continue to look as good as the day it was installed.

The proprietary Nu-Lok slate is only 9mm thick, providing an elegant, natural slate effect finish and weighs just 27kg per square metre installed.

This presents the added advantage of weight saving over traditional roofing methods.

Nu-Lok is equally suitable for new build or refurbishment projects and carries a 50-year Performance and Colourfast Guarantee.

It is the ideal accompaniment for prefabricated buildings, flat to pitched conversions and is a perfect match for the Kingspan Tile Support System.

A Preferred Contractor Scheme has been established already with three of the UK's leading roofing specialists - Cobsen-Davies Roofing, Bracknell Roofing and Avonside Roofing - and SIG Roofing Supplies is sole distributor.

Architects and specifiers can learn more about ceramic slate and metal batten systems by referring to Clauses 135 and 140 in the revised section H65 of NBS, or by visiting www.nu-lok.co.uk.
