Premier Interlink provides modular prison cells

A Premier Interlink (WACO UK) product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Apr 16, 2010

Premier Interlink's Premiercell offsite construction system has been used to build additional cells at Littlehey II Young Offenders Institute.

The Littlehey II building received recognition in the 2010 BREEAM awards, which were presented at Ecobuild.

This Young Offenders Institute consists of two, 2 storey prison house blocks with 120 cells each, constructed by Wates Construction using Premier Interlink's Premiercell offsite construction system.

To achieve BREEAM ‘Excellent’ ratings, a project must meet the required criteria; energy, materials, waste, water, ecology, pollution, transport, management, and health and wellbeing.

A ‘Very Good’ rating scores above 55, an ‘Excellent’ rating requires a score of 70 and above.

Littlehey II achieved a total of 76.23 per cent.

These Ministry of Justice approved cell blocks were constructed substantially offsite at Premier Interlink's manufacturing site in East Yorkshire.

Each 6-cell prison module has steel reinforced walls, floors and ceilings and is approved for use in Category B and C regimes by the MoJ.

The individual prison cells are designed for single occupancy, with a personal shower, handbasin, toilet facility and an external service duct for easy maintenance access.

A patented internal walkway and staircases were added to each of the cell blocks to create easy access for staff and inmates.

A pitched roof has been fitted to each cell block to comply with the MoD security regime.

This BREEAM award and project is further confirmation that Premiercell is now recognised as one of the most cost effective solutions for the provision of permanent custodial facilities as part of the Government's programme to increase prison capacity.
