Papa Architects has been granted planning permission to restore one of Europe's most important estates.

Papa Architects, one of London's leading design practices, has been granted planning permission to restore one of Europe's most important estates Plans to restore and refurbish Grade I listed Dropmore House and its associated listed grounds in Taplow, Berkshire follows a one year feasibility study by the architects, carried out in close collaboration with South Bucks District Council and English Heritage

Situated in the green belt, extensive works to the 220 acre site which houses a Grade I listed early nineteenth-century Aviary and rare tree specimens in its renowned Pinetum, will include the construction of 56 luxurious dwellings.

The project is due to start on site this summer and last two years.

Costs are anticipated to be in the region of GBP 15 million.

The architects' sympathetic and sensitive refurbishment programme features the conversion of a listed water tower in to a two bedroom house with conservatory, and the creation of a three bedroom house at the southern most part of the estate, from what was the original staff accommodation.

Extensive works to the main house, courtyard buildings and grounds as well as a new residential wing, which has been designed to complement the estate's numerous historic buildings and grounds, are also being included.

"We were given the task of identifying a viable proposition that would guarantee the long-term sustainability of Dropmore, whilst at the same time seeking to balance green belt and listed buildings issues," said George Kalopedis, director, Papa Architects.

"We are delighted that our proposals were eagerly accepted and look forward to restoring this English gem." The grounds to the estate will be restored and maintained under a 10-year rolling programme of works.

About Dropmore Estate In 1990, fire razed the eastern third of the house to ground level, followed by a further fire in 1997, causing damage to the Victorian rooms.

The estate has also suffered from vandalism and theft over the years.

Dropmore House was designed by leading Georgian architect Samuel Wyatt for Lord Grenville who purchased the estate in 1792.

During building, a nearby hill was removed to provide a view of Windsor Castle from the windows of Dropmore House, while lawns, paths, planted trees and shrubs contributed to turning the grounds into an area of exceptional beauty.

The first renovation of the house took place in 1795 at a cost of GBP 14,000.
