Palgrave Brown, the UK's leading timber engineering company, has introduced a section on its website to help developers obtain timber creditspoints under the BRE EcoHomes assessment scheme.

There?s now a hassle free way to gain EcoHomes points as Palgrave Brown, the UK?s leading timber engineering company, has introduced a section on its website to assist developers to obtain timber points under the Building Research Establishment?s (BRE) EcoHomes assessment scheme Under the scheme, maximum points for the basic building elements are gained if 75% of timber used is from a sustainable source and that the balance is from a temperate origin

EcoHomes also requires the developer to demonstrate the source and cubic volume for each timber element within a construction.

Andy Warren, group key accounts manager at Palgrave Brown, explained: ?Historically builders and developers have struggled to score EcoHomes points for the timber elements due to the detail required and the lack of complete sustainable timber ?chain of custodies?.

The chain of custody is an independent, audited scheme that proves the timber source is sustainable.

There are other, often expensive things a developer can do to obtain points, but by sourcing their timber package from Palgrave Brown, the developer can obtain timber points at no additional cost.? Palgrave Brown?s website now provides builders and developers with a specification table which clearly sets out cubic volume and percentage of the total timber building element used in construction.

Palgrave Brown has both PEFC and FSC certification chain of custody covering a significant percentage of the total volume of timber in a typical house.

In addition, Palgrave Brown can also supply timber such as temperate origin plywood, which ensures that non-certified timber does not reduce the points scored on certified materials.

Katie Livesey, senior consultant at the Building Research Establishment (BRE), said: ?It is reassuring to see that suppliers are becoming more environmentally aware and are obtaining their products from sustainable sources.

Palgrave Brown?s website is very good and is exactly the sort of activity to encourage people to engage in, as timber product points provide an opportunity to promote responsibly sourced timber, which is a renewable material.

With the simple layout and clear specification table, builders and developers can see just how easy it is to gain these points while building a house which fits the EcoHomes criteria.? Andy Warren added: ?Palgrave Brown is uniquely able to offer all the timber elements of a house and give cubic volumes for each.

This, combined with our PEFC and FSC certification now allows developers to obtain timber points more easily, unlike in the past where timber points were too complicated to obtain.? The EcoHomes developer form requires exact percentages of sustainable timber used per cubic volume.

So for builders and developers seeking additional assistance in completing the form, Palgrave Brown has developed software that details timber type by cubic volume to assist with the application.
