Mastic asphalt waterproofing for Maritime HQ

A Permanite Engineered Roofing Systems product story

Permanite Asphalt has supplied 2,600m2 of its Permaphalt mastic asphalt waterproofing system to the International Maritime Organisation headquarters in London.

The IMO is a specialised agency of the United Nations which promotes cooperation between member states and the shipping industry to improve maritime safety and prevent pollution.

A major GBP62 million refurbishment programme at its headquarters has included repairs and renovation of several flat roofs.

A roof area adjacent to the building's restaurant has been redeveloped to provide an impressive landscaped terrace providing views across the Thames, Houses of Parliament and London.

The terrace includes benches, water features and trees, creating an exceptional outside space for building users and visitors.

The original roof already included water features and greenery, but was on a number of different layers with interconnecting steps and slopes.

Gary Judd of Permanite Asphalt said; "To redevelop the terrace area, the roof needed to be levelled to create a large, single layer patio.

This was a significant challenge because a considerable amount of material was needed to complete the job and the terraced roof area was difficult to access.

The area was surrounded by buildings and there was no access by road.

Concrete was used to raise lower levels and as a result, outlet positions were changed.

"Installed in three 10mm layers, Permaphalt is a specially formulated mastic asphalt roofing system, using advanced polymer technology to give the long term durability, increased fatigue resistance, improved temperature stability and ease of installation.

The trees within the roof space required sunken pits which needed to be fully waterproofed.

However, Permaphalt was easily shaped around these pits and provided a continuous smooth finish.

The use of Permaphalt mastic asphalt also removed the need for root barriers as the system has inherent root resistant properties".
