Architects raise the standard at HMP
High Down
Architects from Pick Everard have been commissioned to design new buildings at HMP High Down in Surrey.
Architects from Pick Everard have been commissioned to design a new three-storey, 270-occupancy house block, a new three-storey education and workshop building and extensions to the gymnasium and visits building at HMP High Down in Surrey Detailed house block designs will be completed by the end of March 2006 and accommodation will be ready for occupation by April 2007

Engineers at Pick Everard have been awarded a four-year term commission from The Northern Joint Police Board to design mechanical and electrical services for all police buildings in the region.
Architects spread their wings at RAF Cottesmore
Pick Everard is building a wing repair facility and workshop at RAF Cottesmore in Rutland with contractors Laing O'Rourke as part of the "Harrier Jump" project.
All remaining building works will be completed by the end of 2007.
Pick Everard is lead architect in this major £33million development, working in partnership with Kier Custodial and NOMS Property.
Pick Everard began working on the project last November with an initial feasibility study.
This will be the first house block built by Kier Custodial within the new 10-year Strategic Alliance for new prison buildings, with a design approach that's both innovative and cost-effective.
The design uses an innovative precast construction method, offering several advantages over traditional build and on-site brickwork.
Off-site manufacture of brickwork and insulation panels in factory-controlled conditions, by a Dutch supply partner, will significantly reduce on site labour and build time and give better consistency of build quality on standard components.
As part of the Prison Service's design brief, Pick Everard's role will be work in partnership with NOMS Property to achieve an 'Excellent' BREEAM environmental rating for the house block and education building.
From the outset, energy efficiency and sustainability are being designed in by Pick Everard's architects, for better quality, more practical and economical buildings with low-energy and energy efficient requirements.
With further prison projects in the pipeline, Architectural Associate David Nisbet commented: "Increasing population capacity and upgrading prison facilities is currently a major priority in the UK.
The High Down project offers a real opportunity for a fresh and innovative approach and we're delighted to be playing our part in establishing this new and very high standard for 21st century prison buildings." Pick Everard is also currently providing architectural and lead consultancy services at other prisons in the UK including a new kitchen at HMP Wellingborough, which opens this Easter.
