Leading consultancy Pick Everard has been appointed to provide engineering design services for GBP16m contract to rebuild fire damaged Sinfin Community School in Derby.

Leading consultancy Pick Everard has been appointed to provide engineering design services for a GBP16m contract to rebuild the fire damaged Sinfin Community School in Derby.

EC Harris has assembled a team comprising Pick Everard and architects Race Cottam Associates and, in conjunction with Derby City Council, the new college building will combine cutting edge design and in-built sustainability.

"We were selected by EC Harris because of our experience on the Derby schools PFI project where we demonstrated we are a team they could trust, offering value for money and the best in leading edge design" said Duncan Green, partner at Pick Everard.

Councillor Sara Bolton, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: "This is a good opportunity to use innovative technology to provide an energy-efficient building designed to help students get the most from their education".

"It will be cheaper to run and help us meet our commitment to tackle climate change".

Using advanced dynamic thermal modelling, the design of the new building will incorporate sustainable features to control the ambient environment to minimise heating and lighting - and so fuel costs - without leaving staff and students in the dark.

The emphasis of the project is on sustainable technology, and the site will focus on using biomass fuels, wind turbines and other renewable resources.

The primary objective is to minimise the impact of the building on the environment, while providing the community with the facilities it will need for the future.

Pick Everard began design work on this fast track project this month.

Building work is due to start at Easter and the new Sinfin Community School is due to open in September 2008.
