PFI open doors for Pickersgill-Kaye
Pickersgill-Kaye has found increased opportunities to supply its new high specification custodial Kaye Class 1 Cell Lock to new build prisons and high security police stations.
Pickersgill-Kaye has found increased opportunities to supply its new high specification custodial Kaye Class 1 Cell Lock to new build prisons and high security police stations.
This business growth comes as a result of the company being included on the database of suitable products that can now be considered for use in future PFI contracts for prison and police applications.
Already, working in conjunction with architects and contractors, Pickersgill-Kaye has installed the Class 1 lock in a number of new facilities throughout the UK.
Successful installations to date include a prestigious new high security police headquarters in the north east of England, and the new Basildon police station custody suite.
Other prominent project successes include high usage police cells in locations in London and Northern Ireland, with further projects currently underway.
The Kaye Class 1 lock was developed by Pickersgill-Kaye over a two year period and has quickly gained a strong reputation for safe and reliable operation, low maintenance and value for money.
Alongside the lock's development, a new specification for custodial doors, SS317 - the first official standard in the custodial industry - was also created and the Kaye lock was tested successfully against this demanding standard.
Amongst the rigorous tests carried out were 300,000 handle operations and door slams, 100,000 key operations as well as the lock's resistance to a 12- hour saw attach, a side load on the deadbolt of 13.5kN and an end load on the deadbolt of 25kN.
The Kaye Class 1 lock fits all UK cell doors and provides ergonomic design with a safe and easy to use anti-ligature handle.
The range of successful installations is illustrative of how PFI can benefit not only suppliers, but also building specifiers and product users as they have the opportunity to exploit a wider range of products, equipment and technology than may have been available previously.
Pickersgill-Kaye's business development manager for security and engineering products, John Moore, commented: "The whole area of custodial and high security locks is undergoing substantial and exciting change because suppliers such as ourselves will now be able to compete for new opportunities offered in future PFI projects".
He added: "We are currently working closely with a number of consortia across the UK, developing solutions to meet their requirements".
"In addition to the Class 1 Cell Lock, we are, with our software partners, in the final testing stages of an electromechanical version, K-Interactive - 'The Electronic Lock Solution'".
"This impressive locking system will further extend the options open to building specifiers and user/operators in buildings were access control systems are installed.".
