Pilkington Pyrostop' glass has been used to give high performance fire resistance and aesthetic appeal to the construction of Swindon's new £100 million Private Finance Initiative hospital.
Crispin Wride were responsible for the specification of the Pilkington PlanarT system, with architect, Chris Broach citing "quality, appearance and durability" as the main reasons for its incorporation into the frame design of this first phase of building.
For the atrium, double glazed 10/16/6mm clear glass Pilkington Planar units were installed supported by 12mm glass fins, while for the canopy, the architects specified 10/2/6mm single laminated glass for added strength and safety as well as appearance.
The Pilkington Planar concept provides a flush glass surface, enabling designers to create a glass envelope for any building structure without the use of conventional and obtrusive mullions or frames.
The glass is connected to Pilkington 905 fittings using austenitic type 316 stainless steel fittings, countersunk into the glass.
The 905 bolts interface connection between the glass and support structure is used for both the canopy and atrium allowing the absorption of live loads and thermal expansion through a steel pin connected to the backup structure.
The first phase of Jubilee House is now complete, demonstrating the aesthetic and versatile quality of glass when used as a design medium.
The Pilkington Planar system allows architectural freedom of design, enabling the architects to incorporate high performance functionality into creativity.
The building holds the IT systems for the John Lewis department stores and the Waitrose supermarket chain and the move from London to the Bracknell location provides a more secure environment to cater for the group's future needs.
The second phase of the scheme, which includes the construction of more offices on the site, is due to start later this year.
