Pilkington Optilam I Ocean Blue glass has been used to create a stunning roof for a new transport interchange at the North Manchester Business Park, as part of a regeneration drive in the city.

The new airport-style structure has been created to serve the extension of Manchester's Metrolink It connects the tram with a nearby train station, and the eye-catching curved copper roof of the station incorporates a lens shaped section of glazing to stunning effect

SkyLight Solutions Limited undertook the subcontract to design, manufacture and install the glazing and used Pilkington Optilam I to create a faceted glass section in the centre of the structure.

The glazing panes measured 1.5 m x 3 m and consisted of 11.5 mm heat soaked toughened laminated glass with a 1.52mm Ocean Blue PVB interlayer.

The glass was structurally glazed into a Schuco FW60+ glazing system.

The project is part of Manchester's wider initiative to regenerate new business areas within the city.

The North Manchester Business Park offers access to major opportunity for employment.

Home to a number of leading businesses, the park covers 160ha of land less than two miles from Manchester's thriving city centre.

Robert Culley, Managing Director of skylight specialists, SkyLight Solutions Limited says: "The canopy was designed by leading architects Aukett Fitzroy Robinson.

The bespoke lens design required a large number of one-off components to construct the elliptical edge of the glazing.

We worked closely with the main contractor, Balfour Beatty, to develop a design that would accommodate the tolerances of the underlying cable tensioned steel structure.

"Pilkington was a vital partner in the project, and assisted us during the design process of glass selection, including providing structural calculations.

The finished canopy is a stunning structure, and is enhanced by the use of Pilkington Optilam I Ocean Blue glass, to compliment the copper roof".

Pilkington Optilam I is ideal for providing both impact resistance and security and is produced by combining two or more sheets of glass with one or more plastic interlayers.
