The UK largest housing and regeneration group has today backed government funding plans to regenerate parts of the city of Hull, claiming that it will act as a catalyst for the wider regeneration of the city.

The government yesterday awarded Gateway - the area's market renewal pathfinder - GBP33.7 million to build high quality affordable new homes; improve existing homes and replace obsolete and abandoned properties in the Newington and St.

Andrew's area of West Hull.

It has also extensively consulted with the local community on plans to transform the area, including helping local residents make a community DVD.

Proposals for the area include the demolition of around 550 properties, improving 500 privately owned homes, bringing 1,300 properties up to the Government's Decent Homes Standard.

A recent survey found that 4 out of 5 people backed the proposals to transform the Newington and St Andrew's area.

Scott Wise, Head of Market Renewal at Places for People said: "For the last few years work has been underway to assess the falling demand for housing in the City, where a large number of homes are empty, house prices are low and many properties are in a poor condition.

"Working in partnership with Gateway and the West Hull community we aim to help transform the area into a viable and sustainable neighbourhood with a mix of homes for sale, shared ownership and affordable rent being provided.".
