Pland Stainless washrooms really matter at The 02

A Pland Stainless product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Oct 1, 2008

Pland Stainless supplied its products to the new 'Matter' nightclub at The O2, Greenwich peninsula, South-East London.

WCs, cisterns, urinals and a variety of standard and bespoke wash troughs, all manufactured from stainless steel, were a crucial part of making 'Matter' a world class live music and club night venue.

Pland Stainless literally had to pull out all the stops to help complete the project on schedule, which meant supplying bespoke wash troughs on a three week leadtime.

Pland Stainless was specified by world renowned Pentagram design house because its products helped created a modern contemporary look as well as being hardwearing and resistant to vandalism.

William Russell, at Pentagram, explains: "We wanted to create a contemporary feel to the internal fittings and the stainless steel products from Pland achieved this perfectly".

"Stainless steel is a superb material for creating an appealing and durable facility that also complemented other aspects of the design scheme.

The work on site has been carried out by Collins Construction Plc, which was the main contractor.

'Matter' is due to open in September 2008.

The high number of people expected to visit Matter meant that Pland Stainless was required to supply special wash troughs.

Again manufactured in stainless steel, these bespoke designs were required because the washrooms have WC cubicles that run along both sides - to cope with the high volumes of people.

This created a need for the bespoke double sided wash troughs, with four separate bowls and taps located at each end, enabling access from users at both sides.

The fact that Pland was able to supply these bespoke items on a three week leadtime is testament to its manufacturing capability and customer service responsiveness.

Matter now has a total of 86 WC cubicles including VIP washroom facilities, all of which were supplied by Pland Stainless.

The back-to-wall Turin WC pans at 'Matter' were also supplied in stainless steel and incorporated an anti-vandal shroud that completely covered the P trap.

Pland Stainless offers these as standard products and has designed them to provide the highest levels of durability and anti-vandal resistance.

All washroom products supplied by Pland Stainless are made from 304 grade stainless steel, which offers excellent resistance to corrosion and impact damage.

It is also resistance to attack from cleaning fluids and bleaches.

Stainless steel is available as a satin or polished finish, which matches all internal decoration schemes as well as providing an easy to clean and hygienic surface.

Stainless steel, unlike ceramic based washroom equipment, is 100 per cent recyclable which means that it generates zero waste in future refurbishments.

It is this ability to be re-used an indefinite number of times that makes it the preferred choice with designers looking at life cycle costing - the fact that steel has a strong residual value again increases its appeal.

Pland Stainless provides one of the widest ranges of stainless steel washrooms, for the sanitaryware, healthcare and laboratory sector along with other specialised markets.
