New play units make Enfield parks a destination

A Playworld Systems (Europe) product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Nov 21, 2008

New bespoke play units from Playworld Systems have helped to bring more visitors and a Green Flag Award to major destination parks in the London Borough of Enfield.

Oakwood Park and Broomfield Park are both large and popular play spaces, so when the time came to refurbish the sites expectations were high.

The main aim of the project was to replace a substantial centrepiece timber play unit in both parks with new units of similar magnitude.

Several companies were given the brief to design, supply and install large modular units that were stimulating and challenging for ages 8-14 years.

A 'friends of the park' consultation group also made a special request for it to have real play value so that children could take different routes to encourage energetic play.

The project was also challenging due to the topography of the sites.

Playworld's project manager Richard Farr explained, "Oakwood spanned a large gentle slope and Broomfield a much larger gradient".

"We were able to span these differing levels using various Playworld components to create a pair of structures that were slightly different from the norm and had instant impact for the children".

"Playworld won the contracts for both sites because they provided us with schemes that were innovative, challenging and met the expectations of its users", said Tina Heather, assets, projects and business development officer for the London Borough of Enfield.

The new bespoke Playworld units are designed to facilitate accessible play for children of all abilities.

They are certainly drawing in the crowds and have sparked excellent feedback from all groups, even catching the eye of the Green Flag Award judges.

Delighted with the results, Tina said, " The play areas have been a huge success".

"We are also proud that Oakwood Park has subsequently been awarded a 'Green Flag' and there is no doubt that the new play equipment contributed to this.".
