Provian tackles the earth for Viridor

A Provian Construction product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Dec 6, 2007

Provian Construction contract with Viridor Waste Management means moved over 500,000m3 of soil - enough to fill a massive 200 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The project at Shelford, outside Canterbury, is worth over GBP945,000 and involves the creation of a new landfill cell and the capping and restoration of previously landfilled areas.

Work started in late May and was due for completion at the end of October.

However, due to efficient management, Provian Construction will complete the works by the beginning of October, on budget and ahead of schedule.

The project has seen the company remove over 500,000m3 of soil, made up of different strata of clay, sand and hoggin - a mixture of clay and gravel.

Each strata was individually removed and carefully stock piled for future use.

This method of carefully reusing the soil has also ensured that throughout the contract not one lorry load of material has left the site.

After the soil had been removed, the site was lined with 1m thick engineered London clay and 17,000 square metres of welded HDPE liner all of which were placed under the close scrutiny of third party construction quality assurance engineers.

Subsequent to lining more than 8,500 square metres of baled tyres were laid as a leachate drainage / collection blanket over the base of the cell.

This system of recycling old tyres is much more environmentally friendly and cost effective than imported gravel, and helps finds a use for old tyres.

After the cell is full to capacity, it will be capped with engineered clay and restoration soils which incorporate a well and pipe work network to extract gas from the landfill to power generation facilities.

As part of the project, Provian Construction is undertaking 80,000 square metres of such capping and restoration including the raising of 60 gas extraction wells.

Specialist earthworks is just one of the services offered by Provian Construction, part of the Brett Group.

The company also provides expertise in Building, Civil Engineering, Surfacing and Small Works.
