Professional Polishing Services is launching a wall sculpture design competition worth GBP1,000 for students in the West Midlands.

The UK's premier stainless steel polishing company is launching a wall sculpture design competition worth GBP1,000 for students in the West Midlands.

Professional Polishing Services (PPS) will manufacture the winning design and install it on the front of their Smethwick premises.

The competition will be open to all students at West Midlands universities as well as the Open University.

Entrants will be required to submit their registration by July 31, including a brief letter from one of their tutors confirming they are an undergraduate student in a discipline that has relevance to the design of a stainless steel sculpture.

There is no entry fee and all materials to manufacture the winning entry will be provided by PPS.

Kirsty Davies, Director and General Manager of PPS, said: "Designs must show imaginative and practical use of the range of finishes produced by PPS.

"Materials other than stainless steel are allowed in the design as long as they are non-ferrous and stainless steel is the main metal used.

The entrant must have researched issues of cross-contamination and documented this as part of the entry".

PPS have been responsible for some of the most stunning stainless steel sculptures nationwide, including the Tree of Remembrance in Manchester's Piccadilly Gardens; acclaimed works by artist Anu Patel in Birmingham; a stainless steel wall on a helicopter pad opposite Aston University in Birmingham; and at a shopping centre in Bristol, the finishes for which have been used in both national and international architectural projects.

On registering for the design competition, the entrant will be sent a comprehensive pack containing examples of finishes and a copy of the rules.

An open day will also be arranged to allow entrants to assess the site to see the location for the winning sculpture and how the finishes are produced.

The size of the completed entries should be about 3000mm x 1500mm but this is only a guideline.
