Paul Blackwell at Portakabin says: 'It has never been more important for companies to ensure their buildings are energy efficient'.

Following the introduction of the Climate Change Levy (CCL) as a tax to reduce the commercial, industrial and public use of energy, increased pressure has been put on hospital managers to save on their energy usage Simply looking for a more competitive utility provider is no longer the only option and purchasing more thermally efficient buildings can help significantly

Paul Blackwell, Product Development Manager at Portakabin, the leading modular building supplier, says: 'With the advent of initiatives such as the Climate Change Levy and the changes to Part L of the Building Regulations, it has never been more important for companies to ensure their buildings are energy efficient.

'The Portakabin Ultima building system, has been specifically designed with improved insulation and air tightness standards to improve energy efficiency'.

Independent test results published by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) showed that the building improved upon the maximum permissible Building Regulations Part L air leakage standard by approximately 90 per cent.

This is thought to be the best result for any hospital building, either traditional or modular build, ever tested.

The tests measure the amount of air lost through the fabric of the building to ensure that end users aren't paying to heat air that then escapes.

In addition to losing valuable heat, leaky buildings also allow unwanted external air in, increasing noise levels, pollution and causing heating and ventilation systems to work inefficiently.

As a result of uncontrolled air leakage, it is estimated that the majority of non-domestic buildings will leak as much as 50% of their heating energy, which is a wasted expense and is also damaging to the environment.

Paul continued: 'We're absolutely delighted with the results of these independent tests which confirm that our products are more comfortable for occupants by all but eliminating draughts and unwanted heat loss, and that our design philosophy and methods of construction produce buildings which are superior in quality to traditional ones'.

Portakabin estimates that the Ultima building uses 20% less heating energy than buildings designed to meet the previous (1995) Building Regulations, proving that the Ultima building is a smart investment, which can really help to reduce the amount of energy used.
