A Pointer product story

Pointer gain ISO14001:2004 accreditation for their Environmental Management System.

It is our belief that Pointer have become the first Scottish-based security industry company to gain ISO14001:2004 accreditation for their Environmental Management System, once again highlighting the company's forward-thinking nature.

It has been a significant characteristic of Pointer's thirty-five year history that we tend to think outside the box well before the rest of the residents of 'security island' in Scotland.

Pointer have always believed that they belong to a much wider world than the inward-looking security industry, and have proved once again that they are one step ahead.

The ISO 14001:2004 award is the internationally recognised standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS).

To achieve the award Pointer undertook a thorough review of all the company's systems and processes and looked at ways in which these could be made more environmentally friendly.

It was very much a case, once again, of Pointer's old dog learning another new trick.

Sandy Rowan, Pointer's Managing Director, was delighted with the award, and commented: 'In comparison to the relative inertia of the late twentieth century, the twenty-first century represents both a greater opportunity but also a far greater challenge to the electronic security industry.

The digital revolution has changed the landscape and climate of the business world.

New technologies mean that companies can more realistically monitor the effect on the environment which their activities may cause.

They can also learn how to minimise the effect of these activities, primarily by taking advantage of developments such as 'the paperless office', in-car satellite navigation systems and greater capacity of the internet.

Pointer have once again showed that we have raised our anchor and moved away from 'security island' and joined the real world, a world which is governed by IT and IP.

We have realised the opportunities as well as the benefits which can be had.' Mr.Rowan continued: 'At Pointer, we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously.

We wanted the processes we have in place have been recognised by an international standard, just as we did in the 1980s with our Quality Management System and the ISO9001 accreditation.

We have spent a significant amount of time and resources on training the workforce so that they understand the reasons behind the initiative and buy in to the culture of the organisation, which is committed to adopting an environmentally conscious approach to its business operations'.

Pointer's commitment to the continual improvement of its environmental performance is reflected in the clear goals we have set ourselves.

We intend to:.

- Comply with all applicable legal requirements and with other requirements to which the organisation subscribes related to it's environmental aspects.

- Where practical and economical, utilise recycling disposal routes.

- Take account of the environmental aspects it can control and those that it can influence.

- Ensure that all our staff appreciates the environmental consequences of their work so that environmental gains may be maximised and adverse impacts avoided or minimised.

- Minimise the impact of vehicles on the use of natural resources and emissions to air through advanced driver training, route planning and 1st time fixes.
