Ecoplay greywater management system that recycles bath and shower water to flush WCs will help the housing association properties at Oxley Gate to meet the Code for Sustainable Homes requirements.

It will also be installed in some new private homes to meet the challenges of sustainable construction.

"The Ecoplay greywater system is a proven renewable technology and it will limit excessive water consumption in the homes, without having to change any of the bathroom products," said Site Manager Adam Gray of Taylor Wimpey, the main developer for the project.

"The plumbers have reported that the system is easy-to-fit and that it performs successfully straight away".

"Its compact design also allows it to be easily boxed off once fixed in place," he added.

Ecoplay helps to reduce water usage in the home by up to a third by recycling bath and shower water and using it to flush the toilet.

This low-maintenance system involves a skimmer to remove light surface debris such as foam hair and soap whilst heaver particles sink and are flushed away to waste.

Treated greywater is transferred into a storage tank ready for reuse.

The Ecoplay system can hold upto 100 litres, which is capable of providing approximately 15 toilet flushes.

The UK is the third most water stressed country in Europe according to Waterwise, a UK organisation which aims to decrease water consumption in the UK, so products such as Ecoplay are currently much in demand.

Graham Fisher, Business Development Director at CME Sanitary Systems, said: "Ecoplay is becoming a popular choice for affordable housing as it can play a major role in helping to meet level 3 on the Code for Sustainable Homes".

"It also means that developers can build homes that appeal to buyers but still conserve water, by not having to compromise on luxury fittings such as power showers or deep baths".

Since its launch in 2008, Ecoplay has been awarded 'Green Product of the Year' at the Sustainable Building Services Awards, in recognition of its levels of innovation and environmental qualities.

It has also received a Silver award at the Gaia awards at the Big 5 in Dubai last year, which recognises construction products and services that reduce environmental impact.
