The hotel and country club picked to host next year's Ryder Cup is turning to fire protection specialist Promat to help look after its guests Ireland's 5-star K Club Resort sits along the River Liffey, among 550 acres of the County Kildare countryside

It boasts Arnold Palmer-designed courses - the class required to host golf's greatest matchplay contest.

Now it has built a health complex befitting the status.

The K Spa includes a 16.5m indoor swimming pool, saunas, steam rooms, a well-equipped gym, even a pilates and yoga studio.

Promat's Masterboard is providing the passive fire protection.

"We were looking for a lining system for the pool hall that offered 60 minutes fire protection, moisture resistance, dimensional stability and an attractive, hygienic surface finish," says Patrick Lynch, of Dublin-based architects Brian O'Halloran Associates.

"The system based on Masterboard fitted the bill precisely and we received excellent technical support and service".

Passive fire protection is playing a vital role in construction these days.

Unlike active protection measures, such as sprinklers, it's built into the fabric of a building.

It creates a physical barrier to contain heat and prevent the spread of fire and smoke.

This helps control the course of a fire and the damage it can do, giving occupants time to get out and fire fighters chance to save the building.

Promat makes a broad range of high performance fire protection products and systems for the construction industry.

Their application includes partitions and barriers, ceilings, structural steel protection and ducting.

Promat has proved itself on projects including Dundrum Town Centre, Coca Cola, Tekeda, Intel, National Aquatic Centre, Heathrow Terminal 5, Canary Wharf and the Jubilee Line extension.

The product used at K Spa, Masterboard, is a versatile Class 0 calcium silicate building board, which provides up to one hour of fire protection.

It is strong, light and as easy to cut and fix as timber.

The board is designed for fast and easy installation; no specialist equipment is needed.

Calcium silicate is a naturally moisture-resistant material, so even on an exposed site it will not rot, bow or warp.

Specialist sub-contractor Mayford Construction installed 1600m2 of Masterboard in the spa's pool hall.

It forms the substrate of a fully integrated moisture-resistant lining system used for the ceilings, curved beams and splayed walls.

As a finish, the architects picked Steridex from Liquid Plastics .

It's a plastics-based decorative finish that is anti-microbial and vapour permeable.

For the suspended ceilings, they chose a treated coated metal grid system from Richter Systems .

Patrick Lynch of O'Halloran's says technical support from suppliers such as Promat played an important part in the project's success.

Promat's back-up is based on a worldwide network of research centres and a pedigree that stretches back more than 40 years.

The company can work with designers to achieve the most cost-effective solution without compromising performance.

Promat is owned by Etex, a European building materials group with centres in more than 30 countries, forming a global network of specific knowledge concerning fire protection and high temperature insulation.

Its fire protection manuals are well known as the industry standard for fire-safe construction worldwide.

They offer tried and tested solutions for fire protection and safety.
