Employers who work with Proskills are to get the support of a specially developed website to help young people.

Employers who work with Proskills, the Sector Skills Council which looks after process and manufacturing, are to get the support of a specially developed website so that they can work with schools in order to get young people inspired by a career in process and manufacturing The careers-focussed website - www.prospect4u.co.uk - aims to get people excited by a career in the Glass, Building Products, Printing or Coatings industries

It has been launched by Proskills, who will be sending links and advice to employers on how to make the most of the site.

Neil Robinson, Proskills' Careers Plan Manager, said: "This careers-focussed website is aimed at employers to help them generate excitement amongst people about their industry.

It will help employers to get youngsters and other potential jobseekers thinking about their future and seeing first-hand how they can work their way up the ladder within their chosen industry.

The aim is for teachers to be able to use this website as a tool to help them illustrate available careers".

Called prospect4u, one of the site's tasks is to show the jobs and careers progression route graphically so that people can see how to develop a successful career within the Glass, Building Products, Print or Coatings industries.

Neil continued: "The website is effectively an extension to the I Choose careers advice programme which shows people clear pathways and progression routes to careers.

One of the topics in the forthcoming Diploma in Manufacturing and Product Design will be careers, so this website will also dovetail into that quite neatly".

The website has been welcomed by employers within process and manufacturing.

Brian Pilling, HR Director at Pilkington Glass, said: "The prospect4u website provides ideal material to be used in schools to help young people with their career choices".

And Ian Aspley, Manufacturing Director for Marley Eternit, said: "prospect4u will be the ideal tool to enable anyone interested in the Building Products Sector to view the exciting careers and opportunities available with a click of the mouse".

The careers information is accessed from an urban street scene which brings each of the four industries to life to young people aged 14 plus.

Glass, Building Products, Print and Coatings each have pages dedicated to working in the relevant industry, jobs and career progression, key skills, qualifications, apprenticeships, where the diplomas fit, case studies, how to find a perfect career and a glossary of terms appropriate to the industry.

Hannah Elson, Project Manager for prospect4u at Proskills, said: "Until the development of the I Choose careers materials and the expansion of the www.prospect4u.co.uk site, there has been limited careers material available for our industries.

The new website offers people an opportunity to find quality career information and guidance on line at their own convenience.

"We are currently trialling the I Choose careers advice programme which equips teachers and students with specially developed materials to demonstrate what it is like working in the glass, building product, printing and coatings industries.

This new website works in conjunction with these materials to offer youngsters an opportunity to take things a stage further by showing them just how far they could progress in these industries".

The other industries Proskills represents - Extractives, Paper, and Furniture, Furnishings and Interiors - will join the website throughout 2008.
