Primer System Excels On Forth Road
Bridge Trials
A primer system has proved it is up to one of the most exacting jobs in the UK - painting elements of Scotland's Forth Road Bridge.
Following trials conducted this autumn, Actan GS has been praised for its environmental characteristics and ease of application on the famous 2km long bridge With a VOC content of less than 0.1 per cent per litre, Actan GS was applied directly to two weathered galvanized steel closed circuit TV columns situated on the eastern footpath and cycle track, 50 metres above sea level

Actan GS shines in Highways Agency trials
Actan GS water based primer from Pugh and Co International was successful in recent trials conducted with the Highways Agency on the A6 Fairfield Road Bridge in Buxton.
The extremely low emissions of the water-based primer meant that the footpath did not need to be closed during application, with only safety barriers and warning signs necessary.
Following minimal hand preparation, it was applied by brush directly to the weathered galvanizing.
"Public awareness is with us all the time on the Forth Road Bridge and our four permanent painters have safety as their major priority," said George Hamilton, maintenance and paint inspector with the Forth Estuary Transport Authority.
"The visual and adhesion tests carried out all gave good results, but we were also impressed with its efficiency.
Overcoating times of one to two hours allowed our painters to do the job in very good time.
In addition, it was quick and easy to clean brushes afterwards." Conventional paints often adhere poorly to hot dip galvanized surfaces, but Actan GS is claimed to perform equally well on weathered and new galvanized and non-ferrous metal surfaces.
Developed by Pugh and Co International from laboratories in Brussels, Actan GS can be overcoated with a wide range of one and two pack protective paint systems including vinyls, acrylics, epoxies, chlorinated rubbers and polyurethanes.
Health and safety risks to operatives using Actan GS is minimal, even in enclosed areas, because it does not give off harmful solvent fumes or present a fire risk.
